Why Justin Timberlake’s looking forward to this Sunday

Sam Levi/WireImageThis Sunday is April 30, which means that on Monday, yes, “It’s Gonna Be May.”  The popular ‘N SYNC meme, inspired by the strange way Justin Timberlake sings the word “me” in their hit “It’s Gonna Be Me,” started in 2013, and now YouTube has released some new figures detailing how it causes a huge spike for the song — and the group’s entire catalogue — each year.

According to YouTube, April 30 is the day when the video for “It’s Gonna Be Me” sees the highest spike in popularity.  Since 2013, the video has received more than five times more daily plays each April 30, compared with any other day.

In addition, YouTube says that searches for the phrase “gonna be me” also increase by close to seven times each April 30, compared to daily search averages for the previous week.

And it’s not just that song that benefits. All the other videos on ‘N SYNC’s YouTube channel also get a boost, on average, of 23 percent in views, and 26 percent in shares on April 30, compared to their daily views and shares in the previous week.

This, of course, keeps ‘N SYNC in the public eye — and ear — even though they haven’t released an album since 2001.  It’s no wonder that even Justin Timberlake himself got in on the fun last year, tweeting on April 29, “Everybody… It is ACTUALLY GONNA BE MAY!”

He then added the hashtag “#canyoumemeyourself,” and wrote, “Probably not, right?”
