Capitol/SchoolboyTori Kelly has revealed details of her long-awaited new musical project, Hiding Place, due September 14.
Hiding Place is a collaboration between Tori and Kirk Franklin, a 12-time Grammy-winning gospel star and one of Tori’s musical heroes. Initially, she and Franklin were just going to do one song together, but it turned into an entire gospel project. As she explains, “I grew up on gospel music, so the fact that a legend like Kirk Franklin would take me under his wing was just a dream come true.”
Half the songs on Hiding Place were written by Franklin; he and Tori co-wrote the other half. It marks the first time in his long career that Franklin has ever co-written a song with anyone. Franklin also raves about Tori’s skill as a vocalist.
“I’ve never seen anyone that’s a monster behind the microphone like Tori Kelly…It set the bar higher for my whole career,” Franklin says, adding, “Tori is excellent in everything she does, because she’s a real, pure artist.”
The title of Hiding Place was inspired by verse seven of Psalm 32: “You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with songs of deliverance.”
Tori explains, “That always stuck with me: this idea of God being a place of safety, a place where you can hide from all the crazy things that this world can throw at us. I want people to feel uplifted and encouraged when they listen.”
