Stewart GerardBack in 2016, OneRepublic‘s Ryan Tedder completely burned out, so he put things on hold while he figured the band’s next move.  Now, he says he’s refreshed and ready for new music.

Speaking to Billboard, Ryan says he’s done “a lot of soul-searching during the past two years,” and now, OneRepublic is planning to release its fifth album. “This is stuff I’m the most excited about in years,” he tells Billboard.

So how did he get his groove back?  Ryan explains, “I had this crisis of conscience where I was like, ‘Why are we making records?…What is there to say?’ ‘ I don’t want to write songs just to write songs.”

So, he says, “I had to live life for the last two years to gather enough experiences…so I’m not just putting out music.”

Some of the experiences he “gathered” include collaborating with artists like Camila Cabello, Paul McCartney and Shawn Mendes, as well as dabbling in commercial real estate and developing TV shows.

“It reinvigorated me,” Ryan tells Billboard, “Here I am back making records for people I love, and I have a bunch of singles coming out. I feel like I have a third or fourth wind in me and am excited about doing music and feel like I actually have something to say.”

No word yet on when the new OneRepublic album is due, though Ryan says the band has a title for it already.
