Why “Dunkirk” director didn’t want to “oversell” Harry Styles

Warner Bros. PicturesIf the only thing you know about the upcoming movie Dunkirk is that Harry Styles is in it, that’s not because director Christopher Nolan wanted it that way.  He says he purposely didn’t make a big deal about Harry’s presence in the film — because he didn’t want fans to be disappointed.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Nolan acknowledges that Harry’s role is “small but pivotal,” and explains, “We’re not trying to oversell Harry in the movie for the specific reason that it’s an ensemble. We don’t want people who are huge fans of his being disappointed that he’s not in it enough or whatever.”

“I think what he does is extremely subtle because it’s very real,” Nolan adds. “It’s not cartoonish. [His performance] almost risks being missed because of what it’s actually doing.”

Dunkirk takes place during World War II and in addition to Harry, it stars Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance.  It’s about the near-miraculous evacuation of 400,000 Allied soldiers from Dunkirk, France in 1940, in a mission known as Operation Dynamo.  Harry plays a British army private named Alex.
