Hedi SlimaneTroye Sivan‘s upcoming album is so personal that he wasn’t sure he wanted any guest artists on it, but he realized he needed just one: Ariana Grande.
Ariana sings on a dance track called “Dance to This,” and speaking to Australian GQ, Troye says, “She’s a really good friend…I had this one song and I thought, ‘This song really needs Ariana Grande on it.’ I hate asking people for things, but I plucked up the courage to ask, and I had it like two days later.”
Troye’s also gotten some help from another female pop superstar: Taylor Swift.
“[She’s] always been really lovely to me – super-kind and generous,” he tells GQ. “We have hung out only a couple of times, but she’s just been so open and forthcoming and answered all my questions, because I’m always really interested in what it’s like to be Taylor Swift.”
As for why the album is so personal, it was inspired by Troye’s boyfriend, an American model named Jacob. Troye says, “I was in a writing mode and writing about everything, my personal life included.”
He notes, “If I had it my way, it would be something that was almost completely private. But I think it’s just so obvious that we’re together. So I’m completely fine with everyone knowing who I’m in a relationship with, but then it’s up to me to protect the ins and outs.”
“People see photos of us together, but the relationship itself – the conversations, or the way we talk to each other or the way we look at each other — the actual substance is almost completely private,” he explains. “And that is comforting to me.”
So far there’s no release date or title for the album, which has already produced the hit “My My My.”
