The Chainsmokers talk Chris Martin collabo, say fan response to tour has been “overwhelming”

ABC/Paula LoboThe Chainsmokers wrapped up the North American leg of their Memories…Do Not Open tour Friday in New York City.  The tour was a success, with some fans saying it was the best show they’d ever seen.  But the duo says at first, they had no idea if they could actually pull it off.

“We worked really hard on our show,” The Chainsmokers’ Drew Taggart tells ABC Radio. “Our new album was less dance music than anything else we had put out before, so we felt like it was better to bring a band to play some of those songs.”

“So our show is a hybrid of a DJ set and a band, and we have a crazy production…we had no idea it was gonna work until the first show!” he laughs. “And so to see people say it’s the best…is overwhelming.”

A show highlight has been their hit collaboration with Coldplay‘s Chris Martin, “Something Just Like This.”  How’d it come about?  The Chainsmokers found out Coldplay were fans of theirs, so they invited them to collaborate.

“They called us one day and said, ‘Hey what are you doing tomorrow afternoon? Chris wants to get in the studio,'” Drew recalls. “So we go to the studio…and we played through a bunch of stuff we had sitting on our computer, played some piano and eventually came up with the riff…and Chris was like, ‘This is it!'”

Drew says Chris then grabbed a mic and danced “around the studio for two hours, mumbling the song, and [it] just came out.”

He laughs, “Chris says that songs are ‘sent down’ and he has to be ready to receive them…Thank God we were there for that!”

The rest of the summer, The Chainsmokers play festivals in Europe and club dates in Las Vegas.
