The Chainsmokers set all-time record with “Closer”; Rihanna bests MJ on the chart

Rory KramerThe Chainsmokers‘ biggest hit ain’t never getting older.  “Closer” has now spent more time in the top five than any other single in the 58-year history of the Billboard Hot 100.

“Closer,” which spent 12 weeks at #1 last year, has been in the Billboard top five for 26 weeks — in other words, six full months.  There were two other songs that had spent 25 weeks in the top five — Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson‘s “Uptown Funk” and LeAnn Rimes‘ “How Do I Live” — but “Closer” has just broken the tie to set the record.

In addition, the song has been #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs for 27 weeks.  That’s the most at #1 since the chart debuted in 2013. The previous record holder was “Wake Me Up” by Avicii, with 26 weeks.

There’s another chart milestone this week as well: Rihanna‘s “Love on the Brain” has become her 30th top-10 hit.  There are now only two acts in history who’ve had more: Madonna, with 38 and The Beatles, with 34.  Rihanna was tied with Michael Jackson, but she just broke that tie.  Not bad for someone who’s only been making records since 2005.
