Brian ZiffUnsurprisingly, Shawn Mendes was the big winner at Sunday night’s MuchMusic Video Awards — the Canadian equivalent of the MTV VMAs — which took place in his hometown of Toronto.

Out of eight nominations, Shawn picked up four trophies, including Artist of the Year and Best Pop Artist.  He also performed two songs — “In My Blood” and “Lost in Japan.”   At one point, Marshmello was announced as the winner of the Best EDM/Dance Artist category, but when he took the stage, he removed his headpiece to reveal…Shawn.

Accepting Best Pop Artist, Shawn told the crowd, “Honestly, what I mainly want to say is thank you to everybody who follows an artist when they try to explore musically and support them through that journey. That means the world to me. I love you guys. Thank you!”

Other winners included Logic, Alessia Cara and Khalid for Video of the Year for 1-800-273-8255, Imagine Dragons for Best Rock/Alternative Group, Drake for Best Hip-Hop Artist, Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line for Best Collaboration and Selena Gomez for Fan Fave Single for “Wolves.”
