Image Group LA/ABCNiall Horan’s first solo album is due out next month, and he says the recording process was very different from working with One Direction.

“Before, we recorded albums in hotel rooms with mattresses against the wall as we were touring,” Niall tells Entertainment Weekly. “It was really fun, and it was great laughs, but it was sometimes challenging.”

This time, he got to record in studios with a live band and work at a slower pace.

He did have to adjust to singing without his band mates, though. “I had never really sung on a song for three and a half minutes,” he says, adding, “That was different.”

Niall’s new album, Flicker, will be a collection of “relationship-based” songs inspired by some of his favorite artists, including Fleetwood Mac and Bruce Springsteen.

Flicker debuts in October, though a specific day has not yet been announced.
