courtesy Interscope RecordsDaya has released a new song called “Safe,” inspired by the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas last October.

In the song, she reflects back on a more innocent time while dealing with the current harsh realities of the world.

“‘Safe’ was written the day after the Vegas shooting – I felt powerless and lost in trying to wrap my head around how such a senseless act could be possible,” Daya says in a statement.

She goes on to say that where she grew up — in Pennsylvania —  “there was an illusion and sense of safety.”

“The sad reality, though, is that there are antagonists in society trying to build their own real-life horror stories that seem to be happening more frequently in traditionally safe spaces, like a festival or a high school,” she continues.

“We’re all being forced to recognize the proximity of evil and how easily it could affect us or someone we love.”

The 19-year-old concludes, “This song is me wishing I could just wrap a blanket of safety around myself and the people I love.”

Daya also released a lyric video for “Safe.” It’s her first new release since “New” in October 2017.
