Liam Payne opens up about being overworked in 1D: “People don’t really see what’s going on”

ABC/Heidi GutmanWhile the One Direction guys are certainly keeping busy with their solo careers, it seems their schedules aren’t quite as crazy as they used to be.

Liam Payne tells U.K.’s The Sun that as a member of the group, he was so overworked that it started to take a toll on his mental health.

“I shouldn’t have been able to do as many shows as we did, if I’m honest about it, if I’m brutally honest about it,” he says. “Going out and putting that happy smile on my face and singing the songs, honestly, sometimes it was like putting on one of those costumes, going out there and, underneath the costume, people don’t really see what’s going on.”

He also says he once pulled out of a show, which then got cancelled, after breaking up with his girlfriend.  “I let it get to me that day,” he says. “I wasn’t in a good place.”

Liam adds, “The more we did, I just don’t think we stopped and celebrated enough how great things were and I think that’s what got on top of us in the end. It was like, ‘Oh, you’ve just won three EMAs, but get on the plane and go to the next place.'”

Liam says the 1D hiatus was necessary so they could rediscover their love for music — and apparently, it’s working. “I’m a totally different person now to how I used to be about it,” he says.
