Katy Perry: From cherry Chapstick to cherry pie

Katy Perry‘s new single, “Bon Appetit,” uses food and eating as a metaphor for sex: one of the lyrics is “Hope you’ve got some room/for the world’s best cherry pie.”  Katy promoted the song by sending out an actual recipe for cherry pie, and even giving out pie from a food truck in New York City on Friday.  She told Tasty, Buzzfeed’s food channel, why she chose that particular metaphor.

“The cherry pie in pop culture has been so many different things,” she explains. “It’s been perverted, and it’s been made into something sweet.”

“The cherry in general can go so many different ways,” she adds. “It can be cute, it can be sexy, it can be a euphemism, [or] it can be…just a cherry.”

She also points out that cherries have been a recurring theme in her work.

“Cherries to me mean ‘a little sexy,’ which is kind of interesting because when I started, I had a song called ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and…it says, ‘the taste of your cherry Chapstick,'” Katy explains. “So I guess we’ve gone from cherry Chapstick to cherry pie.”

Though, Katy says “Bon Appetit” was initially inspired by the fact that her friend kept saying “Bon Appetit, b***h!” as an insult.

“I was like, ‘You say that enough, that’s gonna become a song,'” Katy laughs.  “So it became a song…it’s fun, it’s very sexy, it’s probably the sexi[est] side that I’ve ever shown.”

“Bon Appetit” is the second single released from Katy’s upcoming fourth album.  We still don’t know when that’s coming out.
