Frank OckenfelsWhen he’s not making music or touring, John Mayer is indulging his fashion obsession, checking out and collecting cutting edge, obscure and high-fashion brands and trends. Does that mean he’d like to start his own fashion line one day, as so many of his music colleagues have done? Well, maybe.
Speaking to GQ, John says he doesn’t know if he wants to “create things in fashion.” “I don’t know if I’d be an asset to it,” he says, adding, ” I know I’m good at it. I do a lot more designing than I admit, in terms of stuff for me or collabs. I have a very set idea and I’m very good at designing stuff with other people.”
However, he says, “I would love to do it in the future. But I’ve never expected just because I’m interested in something, that that thing should be interested in me. I’m good at removing my ego from that. I have no problem being a fan of someone who’s not a fan of me.”
In general, though, John says he’s more interested in what’s going on in fashion than in the music industry, declaring that he’d rather hang out with a hot designer than with the head of a record company.
“You want to hang out with the person right now who’s free-thinking, the money’s flowing, the creativity is flowing, they’re not afraid to take chances,” he tells GQ.
