In an interview with Vanity Fair, the Oscar winning Titanic and Avatar director offered the first details of the role Winslet will play in his upcoming Avatar sequel.

And yes, like she did playing Rose in Titanic, Winslet is going to get wet.

“She plays a character who’s part of the Sea People, the reef people,” Cameron reveals. “The one thing she did do is demand that she do all her own water work. I said, ‘All right, that’s fine, we’ll have to teach you how to free dive.’ The other actors are up to three- and four-minute breath holds.”

Speaking of Winslet in water, Vanity Fair asked the question Titanic fans have been asking for 20 years: Why didn’t Rose make room for Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack on that floating door?

“And the answer is very simple because it says on page 147 [of the script] that Jack dies,” Cameron said. “The film is about death and separation; he had to die. So whether it was that, or whether a smoke stack fell on him, he was going down. It’s called art, things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons.”

But Cameron, who is known for approaching Titanic with a detailed focus on the physics of the ship’s sinking, says the decision wasn’t just artistic license.

“I was in the water with the piece of wood putting people on it for about two days getting it exactly buoyant enough so that it would support one person…the three hours it took until the rescue ship got there,” he says. “And we very, very finely tuned it to be exactly what you see in the movie because I believed at the time, and still do, that that’s what it would have taken for one person to survive.”
