Todd StefaniSince November of 2016, there have been many attempts to explain why Donald Trump was elected president, but filmmaker Michael Moore has come up with the most unique reason yet: It’s Gwen Stefani’s fault.
In an interview promoting his new documentary Fahrenheit 11/9, Moore tells the Hollywood Reporter that he thinks Trump was upset that Gwen was getting paid more to be a coach on The Voice than he was to host The Apprentice. Moore suggests that Trump decided to announce he was running for president to prove his popularity to NBC, the home of both shows.
Moore claims, “He’d been talking about running for president since 1988, but he didn’t really want to be president. There’s no penthouse in the White House…He was trying to pit NBC against another network but it just went off the rails.”
The filmmaker then suggests that, after NBC cut ties with the candidate following his comment about Mexico sending “rapists” across our border, Trump decided to carry on with his campaign because he was attracting huge crowds and lots of media attention. It’s hard to tell if Moore is joking or not.
Fahrenheit 11/9, an exploration of the election and its aftermath, will kick off the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6.
