Brian ZiffShawn Mendes pretends he’s Bill Murray in the video for his new single “Lost in Japan.”

Specifically, he’s pretending he’s Bill Murray’s character in the Oscar-winning 2003 movie Lost in Translation.  The movie’s about a famous American actor who goes to Japan to shoot a whiskey commercial and ends up hanging out with a much younger woman, played by Scarlett Johansson.

In the video, we see Shawn arrive at his hotel in Tokyo and in the elevator, he spots an attractive woman, played by Alisha Boe from 13 Reasons Why.  We see him filming a whiskey commercial, shaving in his hotel room, showering, and singing about flying a “couple hundred miles” to see the woman he can’t get out of his mind.

Eventually, he and Alisha end up in a karaoke bar, singing with Zedd, who produced a hit remix of “Lost In Japan.”  In fact, 2:48 into the video, the song switches to the remix version, and we see Shawn in the same elevator, but now he’s dancing.  As the clip ends, Alisha gets out of the elevator, and Shawn watches her go — until another passenger in the elevator motions for him to go after her…which he does.

“Lost In Japan” is the follow-up to single to Shawn’s smash “In My Blood.”
