Kai Z FengGwen Stefani is a fashion icon, so it’s difficult to picture her roughing it on an Oklahoma ranch. But she claims that’s just what she and boyfriend Blake Shelton do during their downtime. Gwen, who graces the cover of the new issue of Marie Claire, tells the magazine about the scene at Blake’s Oklahoma spread.
“It’s very tribal. Blake has a sister, she comes with her kids. We cook and get muddy and dirty,” Gwen says. “There are ATVs. Being a mother of three boys, it’s kind of the perfect place. Everything is real now, whereas before, things didn’t seem so real.”
Gwen’s clearly happy with Blake, recently named People’s Sexiest Man Alive, but tells Marie Claire she’s been through a lot to get there. “For a long time, I could not understand why I’d had so much heartache in my life,” she says.
Prior to Blake, Gwen’s previous relationships — with No Doubt’s Tony Kanal and ex-husband Gavin Rossdale — left her with a broken heart.
“What I learned was that my heartbreak was supposed to happen, that it was my purpose to write about and share my story,” says Gwen. “I met at least 50 to 100 people before each show on my tour and got to hear that my truth and my story translated, and I feel very lucky and honored knowing that.”
Gwen’s promoting her new holiday album, You Make It Feel Like Christmas with multiple TV appearances, including her own NBC holiday special. What’s next?
“I would love to do something like [write a musical]…because that confidence has come back now, and I know I have something to offer,” she says. “It used to be such a stress; there was so much doubt in me — now it’s like, ‘Well, just go and write a song.’”
