Apple Music/AbramoramaSongwriter, a documentary about Ed Sheeran directed by his cousin Murray Cummings, debuts on Apple Music today, August 28.  Cummings says the movie reveals some very special and private moments in Ed’s life — like the day he recorded “Perfect,” for example.

In the movie, we see Ed recording the romantic ballad at London’s famed Abbey Road studios, where the Beatles made their records, and collaborating on the track with his composer brother, Matt.

“That was a really special day for all of us, because it was the two brothers working together for the first time,” Cummings tells ABC Radio. “And their dad was such a big Beatles fan, so the fact that it was in Abbey Road, Ed’s father’s there and really proud, and then it’s his two sons working with each other on a song written about his fiancée…it’s just all these layers in this one moment.”

Speaking about Ed’s fiancée Cherry, you get to see a sweet moment where she flies in to see him while he’s living in a house with his songwriter pals, creating the songs for his album Divide.  You’ll also photos of the couple traveling the world together during Ed’s self-imposed social media hiatus.

Regarding the footage of Ed penning songs with his writer pals, Murray says it’s not that his cousin can’t write songs alone — it’s just that he likes hanging out with other people.

“For a guy who’s solo and travels the world on his own playing shows…it’s kind of lonely, I would imagine,” he explains.

“So I think it’s just really fun for him to get in with other musicians and just write, and he really respects these people as well…hanging out with musicians, I think, is something he’s always wanted to do.”
