ABC/Lorenzo BevilaquaLast year, Luis Fonsi‘s “Despacito” was the Song of the Summer.  This summer, a case could be made for another mostly-Spanish song: “I Like It” by Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin.  Does Fonsi feel that “Despacito” opened the door for that song’s success?  Well…sort of.

“I don’t think ‘Despacito‘ did all of this by itself,” he tells ABC Radio. “I think it was definitely a huge part of it, [but] I think it’s been a lot of different songs, a lot of different artists. So I will never sit here and take full credit for it. But I’m just happy that it’s happening.”

“I’m happy that the song broke records,” he adds, calling it a “blessing.”  He adds, “That a song in Spanish is the most-streamed song, the most-watched video… mean, that’s huge!”

Fonsi shot the record-breaking “Despacito” in his home of Puerto Rico, and he says he and his charity foundation have been working to help the island recover after last year’s devastating hurricane.

“We’re rebuilding houses…there’s a lot of work to be done,” he says. “A lot of people ask me, ‘How can we help?’ And I just say, come visit!”

“Just go…stay — have an amazing time!” he adds. “You’re gonna eat, you’re gonna party, you’re gonna dance the night away, so that’s our best medicine.”

And speaking of healing, Fonsi’s says he’s sending his friend and duet partner Demi Lovato love while she’s in rehab.

“I haven’t spoken directly with her but I have been in contact…I’ve spoken to all her team,” he tells ABC Radio. “I consider her a friend, so…we’ve all been very worried.  And we’re really happy to know that she’s taking the road to recovery, and I know she’s gonna get well.”
