“Despacito” nominated for four Latin Grammy Awards

ABC/Heidi GutmanConsidering its amazing worldwide success, it’s not surprising that Luis Fonsi and his chart-topping smash “Despacito” would be nominated for some Latin Grammy Awards.  What’s surprising is that it wasn’t nominated for more.

Luis received four nominations for “Despacito” in the categories of Record and Song of the Year, Short Form Video of the Year, and Best Urban/Fusion Performance — that last one for the song’s remix with Justin Bieber

But Luis wasn’t the top nominee, or even the second or third or fourth top nominee.  Other artists scored as many as nine, seven, six and five nods — Shakira received six, for example.

One reason for the lower number of nods may be that Luis hasn’t actually released an album to go with “Despacito,” so there were fewer categories in which he could be nominated. Still, it’s great news for Luis, who’s currently on a U.S. headlining tour.

The winners will be revealed November 16, 2017 when the 18th annual Latin Grammys are telecast live from Las Vegas on Univision starting at 8 p.m. ET.
