NABILZayn Malik is currently prepping his sophomore album, but unlike when he released his first solo disc, he’s now facing competition from his four former band mates.  Still, the head of his record company says, “Zayn just wants to make his music and do what he does.”

“It wasn’t easy making that decision and having the courage to step out first and make a record,” RCA Records CEO Peter Edge tells Entertainment Weekly. “This album has a more optimistic tone to it after coming through that more challenging time. It shows a lot of growth.”

According to Edge, this new “optimistic tone” is evident in “Still Got Time,” Zayn’s single with rapper PARTYNEXTDOOR

“It’s talking about how it’s great to be young and knowing you’ve still got time to do everything you want to do in life,” he explains.

As for the competition from Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and, possibly Louis Tomlinson, Edge says, “While we’re conscious of what everybody else is doing, I think we’re on the page that we just have to get on with releasing the music. Everybody is going to coexist.”

“What’s emerging is that there are different musical styles that each member is getting into,” Edge points out.

Zayn’s new album, described by Edge as “more personal and less producer-driven,” is expected to arrive later this year.
