Shadow produced most of Gaga’s 2013 album ARTPOP, and he’s described the new album as ARTPOP‘s “little sister.” But now he clarifies that he didn’t mean it’s actually going to sound like ARTPOP, which got mixed reviews.

“What I meant by that is just that feeling and the emotions that we had when we worked on [ARTPOP] are kind of the feelings and emotions we have now,” Shadow tells ABC Radio. “This next thing that we’re working on, I feel the same way that I felt when we were working on ARTPOP.”

Noting that he “loves” ARTPOP, describing it as “really fun and creative and strange,” he notes, “So I think when I said that, that’s what I meant: more than the sound, the feeling.”

Shadow also says that Gaga’s work on the soundtrack for A Star Is Born, and on her new Las Vegas show Enigma, will affect the sound of the new album.

“Everything impacts her creativity, y’know?” he explains. “So…it all plays into what the progression [of her sound] is gonna be.”

Shadow also co-wrote and co-produced six songs on the Star Is Born soundtrack, due out October 5. and says he can’t believe how good an actress Gaga turned out to be.

“When we sat down to the watch the movie the first time…I forgot it was even her acting in it,” he marvels. “She’s like…an alien sometimes. I’m like, ‘How does she even do that?'”
