James Arthur says “Say You Won’t Let Go” is about “where I think everyone wants to be”

Olaf HeineJames Arthur‘s hit “Say You Won’t Let Go” is a love story about meeting someone at a party and finding everlasting love with them, complete with marriage and kids.  But James says only half the song is based on his actual life.

“I always draw upon my personal experiences…a lot of it is from imagination,” James says of his songwriting. Regarding this particular song, though, he tells ABC Radio, “I have been in those positions where I have fallen in love at a house party with someone.”

“But the second verse…the rest of the song, is really, it’s imagination,” he adds. “It’s about where I think everyone wants to be.”

The rest of the lyrics find James singing about bringing his spouse breakfast in bed, taking the kids to school, and loving her “until we’re grey and old,” “even when we’re ghosts” and “til my lungs give out.”

“Happy, with kids, married, I’m not any of those things right now,” he admits. “I’m not married, I don’t have kids…I haven’t got those things. But I want them like everyone else does.”

You can see James sing “Say You Won’t Let Go” this summer as he heads out on tour with OneRepublic starting on July 7 in Kansas City, Missouri.
