Daddy Yankee collecting water & more to help his native Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Maria

fotopress/RedfernsDaddy Yankee is asking you to lend a hand in helping his homeland recover from the destruction done by Hurricane Maria.

The “Despacito” hitmaker, born Ramon Rodriguez in San Juan, Puerto Rico, tweeted ahead of his scheduled Chicago concert tonight: “Bring bottles of water, repellent, diapers, first aid kids, flash lights. Drop off at my concert tonight.”

Yankee tweeted a similar plea Thursday before his concert at New York’s Coney Island.  Early this morning, he posted a video to his Twitter of the donations being loaded into a semi-truck, with thank-yous from him and others lending a hand.

Daddy Yankee’s also scheduled to play the Grand Theater at Foxwoods in Nantucket, CT, Saturday night – no doubt he’ll be accepting donations there as well.

Hurricane Maria was a category four, with maximum sustained winds of 155 MPH, when it made landfall on Puerto Rico Wednesday, the strongest hurricane to strike there in 89 years.  The storm devastated the island, destroying the power grid, communications infrastructure, and untold homes and businesses.  Although the storm’s total destruction isn’t yet known, it’s estimated Puerto Rico’s people could be without power for months.

If you’re not near a city where Daddy Yankee’s playing, you can help by donating to UNICEF, the Red Cross, Americares and and other agencies.
