Alessia Cara wants next album to sound like “Here”

ABC/Matt BrownAlessia Cara broke out big thanks to her debut hit, “Here,” but the Canadian singer admits that the rest of her first album, Know-It-All, didn’t really follow that sonic blueprint.  Looking to her sophomore release, Alessia says she wants to get back to the sound that made her famous.

“The last album was very metaphorical, lots of wordplay. Which I love. But I’m trying to see what will happen if I write a bit more simply,” she tells Rolling Stone. “But sonically, I really wanna lean more toward the vibe of ‘Here’ — that kind of gritty pop-soul, R&B thing. That’s where my heart is, and I think that sound kind of got away from me a little bit just because I was young and so unsure of what I wanted to do.”

Alessia also tells Rolling Stone that she learned an important lesson from Taylor Swift, who was on board with her music when all she had out was an EP.  Taylor invited Alessia to perform with her on her stadium tour in support of the 1989 album and even interviewed her for a magazine.  Alessia says the depth of Taylor’s interest in her work surprised her.

“I was taken aback, in a good way,” she says. “It taught me that no matter how big you become, it doesn’t mean you have to stop loving music or paying attention.”
