Petition calls for New Orleans Confederate statues to be replaced by tributes to Britney Spears

David LaChapelle/RCA RecordsOne of the biggest hot button issues of the moment is the question of whether or not statues across the U.S. that depict figures of the Confederacy — such as Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis — should be taken down. But one fan in New Orleans is now arguing that those statues should indeed come down…to make way for a “real Louisiana hero:” one Britney Jean Spears.

The petition, started by a fan named Kassie Thibodeaux [TIH buh doe], argues that throughout her career, Britney has done numerous charitable things to support her home state, such as donating a quarter-million dollars to help Louisiana flood victims, and raising hundreds of thousands more for Louisiana education and Hurricane Katrina relief.

That alone would make her a hero, but Thibodeaux claims that Britney also deserves to be immortalized in bronze or stone because “she’s proven her strength of character.”

Britney has “not only overcom[e] highly publicized mental breakdown,” argues Thibodeau, and is “continuously working towards improving herself. She’s an inspiration to millions.”

When we last checked, the Change.org petition had attracted nearly 1400 signatures.

Patton Oswalt’s daughter saved him from being a “shut-in alcoholic”

Mededith Salenger and Patton Oswalt; Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic for HBO(NEW YORK) — Patton Oswalt’s daughter Alice saved him from the grips of depression following the sudden death of his wife Michelle McNamara a little over a year ago, he tells Playboy magazine in a new interview.

“If I hadn’t had a daughter and my wife died, we wouldn’t be talking right now. I’m not saying I would be dead, but I would be a shut-in alcoholic,” the 48-year-old comic and actor says.

“Everything would have shut down,” he adds. “I wouldn’t have been about anything. But with Alice, it was and is ‘You got to get up.’”

At the same time, Oswalt was also concerned with making sure Alice, then 7, was OK. He says his daughter, who attends a children’s grief group, is a “really happy little kid,” although there were times when he worried that she was “putting on a show for me, trying to be brave but inside she’s dying.”

“There were times when I had to get her to play a game on her iPad or start a little project,” Oswalt continues, “and then I would say, ‘Oh, let me go upstairs,’ and I would go put my head in a pillow and just scream and cry because I didn’t want to break down in front of her.”

Oswalt is currently engaged to actress Meredith Salenger, 47. The two met through mutual friends back in February.

Lewis’ death is officially listed as ischemic cardiomyopathy, which occurs when the heart can no longer pump enough blood to the rest of the body due to a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply oxygen to the heart.

An autopsy reportedly will not be conducted on the legendary comic, who suffered several heart attacks over the years, and also fought prostate cancer, diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis.

Lewis died at his Las Vegas home, surrounded by his family on Sunday at the age of 91.

Snakes alive! Swift posts another slithery video

Jason Merritt/Getty Images via ABCMonday, Taylor Swift sent the Internet into a frenzy when — after completely deleting her Twitter feed — she posted a new tweet: a brief video of what looked like a snake.  Well, now we can tell you it’s definitely a snake, because in a second tweet Tuesday, Taylor posted more footage of apparently that same snake.

There are rumors that Taylor will release a new song this Friday, and that it’ll be called “Timeless.” So what does the snake have to do with anything?  There’s some speculation that she’s reclaiming the snake idea from her haters…and from Kim Kardashian.

As you may recall, last year, Taylor’s ex boyfriend, Calvin Harris, went after her on Twitter, accusing her of trying to make him look bad.  Calvin fans responded by posting snake emojis on her Instagram feed.

Also last year, Taylor denied she knew that Kanye West had planned to name check her in his song, “Famous.”  But then Kanye’s wife, Kim Kardashian, released a video on Snapchat of a call between Taylor and Kanye, in which Taylor enthusiastically discusses the song with Kanye.

Kim famously clued fans into that post by tweeting a bunch of snake emojis, and again, haters flooded Taylor’s Instagram feeds with the same emoji.  Then all the snake emojis disappeared from Taylor’s feeds.

Not long after that, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom revealed that that the company had created a filter that would allow stars to delete certain words and emojis from their feeds, and that Taylor’s feed was its first test case.

So, are Taylor’s snake posts now her reaction to the controversy last year…or is she calling someone else a snake?  Or neither?  We’ll just have to wait to find out.

Bill Cosby hires Michael Jackson’s lawyer to head retrial defense

iStock/Thinkstock(NORRISTOWN, Penn.) — Bill Cosby has tapped Tom Mesereau, the attorney who helped Michael Jackson get acquitted of child molestation charges in 2005, to help him beat his retrial for the alleged 2004 sexual assault of Andrea Constand.

Cosby’s reps announced on Monday that former lawyers, Brian McMonagle and Angela Agrusa will exit the defense team in the actor’s criminal case, replaced by Mesereau, ex-federal prosecutor Kathleen Bliss and Philadelphia’s Sam Silver, according to Philly.com. Cosby also announced the new team, with fewer details, on Twitter.

McMonagle reportedly formally filed paperwork early this month to leave the revolving-door defense team, which also has included Marty Singer, former Assistant U. S. Attorney Christopher Tayback and Washington D.C-based Monique Pressley.

The announcement by Cosby and his reps came a day before a pretrial hearing is set to begin in Norristown, Pennsylvania Tuesday.

Cosby has always maintained that the encounter with the ex-Temple University employee was consensual, despite admitting in depositions more than a decade ago to giving Constand pills on the night of the alleged assault in his Philadelphia-area mansion nearly 13 years ago.
