“America’s Got Talent” recap: 10 acts perform for $1 million prize in final showcase

Angelica Hale – NBC/Trae Patton(LOS ANGELES) — The final live performance show of the current America’s Got Talent season took place at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater on Tuesday night, featuring the final 10 acts hoping to win the $1 million prize and a chance to be a headline act in Las Vegas.

Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Mel B and Heidi Klum were treated to some truly amazing performances, all introduced by host Tyra Banks.

America’s votes will decide who moves on and who goes home. The result will be announced during Wednesday’s live show on NBC.

Here’s a rundown of the final performances:

Angelica Hill, who recently became a big sister, got the show started with her cover of Clean Bandit’s “Symphony,” bringing all four judges to their feet. Heidi told the nine-year-old, “You are only four-feet-tall, but you are a giant,” adding that in her opinion, Hale was the best singer of the season.

Acrobatic dance crew Diavolo jumped, slid and flew through the air, aided by props, including a huge see-saw ship. Simon declared that any casino owners watching on Tuesday should be booking them immediately.

Evie Clair, 13, who recently lost her father to cancer, delivered a moving rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.” Howie said, “Our hearts and souls go out to you,” adding, “We all go through dark times. What gets us through is hoping and praying for that light at the end of the tunnel…Your voice is that light.”

Singer Kechi survived a horrific plane crash and burns over her entire body to make it to the AGT finals. Following her uplifting performance of Estelle’s “I Am a Conqueror,” Simon declared, “That wasn’t a song — that was an anthem.” Mel B called the performance “powerful and moving.”

Darci Lynne Farmer, a 12-year-old ventriloquist, brought her friends Oscar and Petunia on stage and sang The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends.” All four judges considered Darci Lynne the odds-on favorite to take home the $1 million prize.

Ukrainian dance crew Light Balance, was the last act of the night and delivered a greatest-hits performance of sorts, reprising some of the costumes and elements that made them a hit with the judges. “This is like the Super Bowl, you think someone’s won it, then something else happens ten minutes later that changes it all!” said Simon. Heidi declared, “You should already be in Vegas and I’m going to see it again and again!”

The winning act of season 11 will be crowned when NBC’s America’s Got Talent returns on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.

Jimmy Kimmel rips senator for “lying” about new health care bill

ABC/Randy Holmes(LOS ANGELES) — On Wednesday night, Jimmy Kimmel laced into Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana for proposing new health care legislation that Kimmel said fails the “Jimmy Kimmel” test Cassidy himself had proposed in an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last May.

Cassidy appeared on the program after Kimmel had made an emotional plea for health care legislation in the wake of his newborn son’s need for life-saving heart surgery.

But, Kimmel said, with new legislation that Cassidy and co-sponsor Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., have proposed, “Not only did Bill Cassidy fail the Jimmy Kimmel Test, he failed the Bill Cassidy Test.”

Kimmel said Cassidy “wasn’t very honest” when he appeared on the show.

“He said he wants coverage for all, no discrimination based on pre-existing conditions, lower premiums for middle class families and no lifetime caps.  And guess what? The new bill does none of those things,” Kimmel said.

“Stop using my name,” Kimmel said, “’cause I don’t want my name on it.  There’s a new Jimmy Kimmel Test for you, it’s called a lie detector test, you’re welcome to come by the studio and take it any time.”

Kimmel also had words for critics on social media. “Before you post the nasty Facebook message saying I’m politicizing my son’s health problems, I want you to know, I AM politicizing my son’s health problems because I have to,” he said.

“They’re taking care of the people who give them money, like insurance companies, and we’re all just looking at our Instagram accounts, liking things, while they’re voting on whether people can afford to keep their children alive or not,” Kimmel said of bill’s backers.

“Most of the Congress people who will vote this probably won’t even read it. They want to us to do the same thing,” Kimmel continued. “They want us to treat it like an iTunes service agreement. And this guy Bill Cassidy lied right to my face.”

Hillary Clinton talks tagging polar bears with Vladimir Putin on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”

©2017 CBS Broadcasting Inc./Scott Kowalchyk(LOS ANGELES) — Hillary Clinton stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night to promote her book, What Happened, about the 2016 presidential election.

The major topic of conversation, no surprise, turned out to be Russian meddling in the campaign — just one of the many factors on which Clinton blames her electoral defeat at the hands of President Donald Trump.

“I don’t think anybody can with a straight face say that the Russians did not set out to influence our election, and they did so,” Clinton said. “This latest revelation about the way they bought ads on Facebook and targeted them — we’re gonna find out a lot more, Stephen.”

Clinton explained Russian President Vladimir Putin’s motives, and sounded a cautionary note.

“He wants to undermine how we see each other, how we respect each other, how we support our institutions and our society,” Clinton said.  “I think they believe they had a good outing in 2016 and I think that they will be back in 2018 and 2020 unless we stop them.”

She suggested that if collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia is proven — and despite exhaustive investigation and seemingly endless coverage, it isn’t — people need to take political action.

“What you do is mobilize politically to express your will and your rejection of that kind of Russian involvement and coordination at the ballot box. I mean, that is where we settle our political differences, and that’s where it should be,” she said.

Clinton also told a story about Putin from her time as secretary of state.  “He takes me…into this inner sanctum with this huge desk and the biggest map of Russia I think exists, and he started telling me he’s going here to tag polar bears. And then he says to me, ‘Would your husband like to come?'” Clinton recalled. “I said, ‘Well, I’ll ask him, but if he’s busy, I’ll go.'”

Why the woman behind “Despacito” isn’t mad that Taylor Swift kept it from becoming the longest-running #1 ever

Lucianna Faraone Coccia/FilmMagicLuis Fonsi‘s hit “Despacito” spent 16 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, tying Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men‘s “One Sweet Day” for the longest-running #1 hit of all time.  But before it reached a record-breaking 17th week on top, Taylor Swift‘s “Look What You Made Me Do” knocked it out of the top spot.  But Erika Ender, who co-wrote “Despacito” with Luis, says she’s OK with that.

“We made history anyway!” she tells ABC Radio. “I mean, the song is [now] tied [with] an American song, so I think that’s a great victory for Latin culture, for Latin music.”

And Erika says she’s still hopeful that “Despacito” might score that elusive 17th week at #1.

“It’s not consecutive,” she says. “I mean, if Taylor goes down and ‘Despacito’ goes up one more week, then we break that record.”

Erika, a Latin Grammy winner who’s written 40 hit singles, isn’t sure why “Despacito” has become a massive hit.  But she believes its success is partially due to the fact that she and Luis spent years building their careers in the Latin world.

“I think this is a consequence of all the work that we have done,” Erika tells ABC Radio. “We were in the Latin market, very well known…and I don’t know, planets aligned. Maybe the world wanted to sing and dance in Spanish, and we had that luck!”

Because “Despacito” is in Spanish, fans may not be aware that it’s actually about sex — but Erika says it’s not raunchy.

“It’s a song that talks about sensuality, of seducing, of sex, but in a very classy way,” she explains. “I think that the way we express it is very elegant and very respectful.”

You can hear Erika’s acoustic version of “Despacito” on her latest album, Tatuajes, or Tattoos.

Demi Lovato and Jimmy Fallon have a “Lip Sync Conversation” on Tuesday’s “The Tonight Show”

Andrew Lipovsky/NBCTuesday’s Tonight Show featured Demi Lovato having a “Lip Sync Conversation” with host Jimmy Fallon taped in her dressing room prior her live appearance on the show a night earlier.

The segment, a variation on Fallon’s popular “Lip Sync Battle,” featured the two carrying on a nearly two-and-a-half minute conversation with each other using snippets of popular songs from artists like Adele,  Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Selena Gomez, Adele, Harry Styles and Demi herself.

Here’s an example of how the “conversation” went:

The bit opened with a knock on the door and Fallon mouthing the opening lyrics to Adele’s “Hello.” The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer replies by lip syncing to “I’m the One,” by DJ Khaled featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne.

Jimmy then takes a seat next to Lovato and says “Here I am next to you,” only it’s from Miley’s “Malibu.”

You get the idea.

Ariana Grande joined Fallon for the same sketch back in April.

Tell Me You Love Me — Lovato’s sixth studio album — comes out September 29.

Taylor Swift’s team says “Shake It Off” lawsuit is “ridiculous:” “They do not have a case”

BMLGA rep for Taylor Swift is shaking off a copyright infringement lawsuit over Taylor’s 2014 #1 hit “Shake It Off,” calling it “nothing more than a money grab.”
According to The Hollywood ReporterSean Hall and Nathan Butler, the songwriters behind R&B group 3LW‘s 2001 single “Playas Gon’ Play,” have filed suit, claiming Taylor’s use of the phrases “the players gonna play….and the haters gonna hate,” improperly copies their song.

In the 3LW song, the girls sing, “Playas, they gonna play/ And haters, they gonna hate.”  Hall and Butler claim that they were the ones who popularized that phrase, according to the complaint, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.

“The combination of playas/players playing along with hatas/haters hating may seem like common parlance today, however, in 2001 it was completely original and unique,” asserts the complaint.

It goes on to claim that Hall and Butler “were the first to put such a sequence together using the terms playas and haters, and prior to Defendants’ use at issue herein, the combination had not since been used in popular music.”

The suit accuses Taylor of copying both the players/haters combination, but in a statement to ABC Radio, her rep dismisses the claim as “ridiculous,” calling it “nothing more than a money grab.”

The statement goes on to say, “The law is simple and clear. They do not have a case.”

In 2015, Taylor fended off a similar suit from an R&B singer named Jesse Braham, over his 2013 song “Haters Gone Hate,” which also used “players gonna play, haters gonna hate,” but in reverse order.

In dismissing that claim, Judge Gail Standish of the U.S. Central District Court in California, cited 3LW’s earlier song as proof that the phrase was not original to Braham’s tune.

Watch now: “Thor: Ragnarok” gets the ’80s trailer treatment

Marvel – 2017

(NEW YORK) — The trailer to Thor: Ragnarok is already retro, from its garishly-colored logo to its use of Led Zeppelin’s “The Immigrant Song.” But Nerdist has taken things a step further, and revised the coming attraction to make it look as if it’s a trailer you’d see on a VHS tape in 1987, not 2017.

From the hammy narration, to the non-widescreen aspect ratio, to the video tracking errors — for the young, those are image warbles that had to be adjusted with a knob on your VCR — Nerdist left no detail untouched.

“He’s back to Ragnarock-and-roll!” the narrator exclaims, as an electric guitar riffs. “Thor is fantasy! Thor is excitement! Thor is a world of fantasy and excitement beyond your imagination!”

The teaser even uses TV show footage of Lou Ferrigno as The Hulk battling Eric Allan Kramer as Thor from his appearance in the cheesy 1988 TV movie The Incredible Hulk Returns, in place of Chris Hemsworth.

All this, in addition to special effects that were deliberately downgraded to look as if the movie was made in the Reagan era.

Thor: Ragnarok will open November 3 from Marvel Studios, which is owned by Disney, parent company of ABC News.

Ariana Grande’s gift for mimicry makes her Fallon’s top “Tonight Show” musical video

Theo Wargo/NBC/Getty Images for ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’Tuesday, September 19 is Jimmy Fallon’s birthday, and in honor of the occasion, YouTube Music has compiled a list of the Tonight Show host’s 15 Top Musical Moments.  The list was determined by which of The Tonight Show‘s music-related viral videos have the most views, and coming in at #1 is Ariana Grande.

According to YouTube, the singer’s turn on Fallon’s long-running bit “Wheel of Musical Impressions” is the Tonight Show’s most popular musical moment.  During the sketch, Ariana busted out note-perfect imitations of Britney Spears singing “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” Christina Aguilera singing “The Wheels on the Bus,” and Celine Dion singing The Weeknd‘s “Can’t Feel My Face.”  Both Christina and Celine later praised Ari for her impressions.

Ari is also featured in another one of the top 15 musical moments: the “Ew!” sketch she did with Jimmy, where she played a vapid, social media-obsessed tween, comes in at #7.

The #2 most-popular Fallon musical moment, according to YouTube, is Emma Stone‘s incredible performance on the “Lip Sync Battle” sketch, during which she busted out “All I Do Is Win” by DJ Khaled, Ludacris, Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg.

Some of the other stars who are included in Fallon’s top musical moments videos include Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez.  For some reason, the many musical sketches Fallon has done with his BFF Justin Timberlake didn’t make the list.

Jake Gyllenhaal answers the question, “Would Taylor Swift write a song for you?”

Mert & MarcusTaylor Swift’s brief relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal feels like a lifetime ago, but it appears that the actor will never live it down.

In a video posted to Facebook to promote his new movie Stronger, due this Friday, Gyllenhaal chats with Jeff Bauman, a Boston bombing survivor who lost his legs in the blast. Gyllenhaal portrays Bauman in the film.

During the chat, Gyllenhaal and Bauman spend about two minutes just busting on each other, and finally, Bauman goes there and mentions Taylor.

“If you lost your legs in real life, do you think Taylor Swift would write a song about it?” asked Bauman.

For me, or about it?,” responded Gyllenhaal.

“No, like, for you. Like a country song,” replied Bauman.  To which Gyllenhaal responded, “She’s sort of moved more into pop now.”

Taylor’s brief relationship with Jake, which lasted from the fall of 2010 to January of 2011, is said to have inspired a number of songs on her album Red, including “All Too Well.”

But it’s not just Jake who can’t escape Taylor’s shadow. His sister Maggie was recently asked about “All Too Well” during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, due to a lyric that goes, “Left my scarf there at your sister’s house.”

“I am in the dark about the scarf,” Maggie said, but then added, “It’s totally possible. I don’t know. I have been asked this before.”
