Nelly’s accuser won’t testify, believes “the system is going to fail her”; his attorney wants a public apology

Scott Dudelson/Getty ImagesThe woman who accused Nelly of rape last weekend is refusing to testify against the rapper, according to a letter posted on her lawyer’s website.

In the letter, the woman’s lawyer, Karen Koehler, says that the woman, who she describes as a 21-year-old college student, has told the Auburn, WA Police Department and the King County Prosecutor’s office to “put a halt to the criminal investigation of Cornell Haynes, Jr. (aka Nelly)” and that “she will not testify further in a criminal proceeding against him.”

According to Koehler, the woman feels that there’s no way anyone will believe her word against Nelly’s and that “the system is going to fail her.”  Koehler writes, “People are saying horrible things already. She cannot handle this. She is about to break. She wants to close the door. She wants this to end. She just cannot bear it.”

Adds the lawyer, “She never wanted notoriety. She never wanted a dime from that man.”

In response, Nelly’s attorney said in a statement to ABC News, “This is welcome news, even though Nelly was one hundred percent sure he would be vindicated. This is simply not enough. Her reckless accusation, once investigated thoroughly, was exposed for what it was: a fabrication. A fabrication that has caused Nelly and his family to suffer emotionally and financially.”

“It is not enough,” continues the statement. ” This type of reckless allegation is an affront to women who are real victims of sexual assault. I am suggesting that Nelly seeks a public apology. I am further suggesting that Nelly considers whatever legal options are available to him. Nelly thanks his fans for their unwavering loyalty.”

The woman claimed that last Saturday, Nelly assaulted her on a tour bus after his concert in Auburn, WA, just south of Seattle.  He was taken into custody, booked and released without being charged.  He later proclaimed his innocence in a series of tweets.

“It’s so beautiful”: Mackenzie Davis says fans will be satisfied with “Halt and Catch Fire” series finale

AMC/Bob Mahoney(NEW YORK) — Mackenzie Davis has been having a banner year.

Her fan-favorite episode of Black Mirror, “San Junipero,” won an Emmy last month, she landed a coveted role in Blade Runner 2049, and now she’s wrapping up four seasons as computer genius Cameron Howe on the AMC drama Halt and Catch Fire.

The show’s series finale airs Saturday night. As for whether fans will be satisfied with the ending, Davis believes they will.

“It’s so beautiful,” she tells ABC Radio. “I really don’t feel like it’s just my bias of being a part of the show. It just ends perfectly. Yeah, the creators did such a beautiful job with wrapping it up.”

Davis says that while she would have loved to continue the show, she feels it’s better to go out on a high note.

“As a viewer and as an actress, I think that 40 hours is a good amount of time to tell a story and it’s nice to go out while you’re still sort of climbing and making something better rather than when you’re really reaching for ideas because people are tired and want to move on,” she says.

Davis adds, “I’m really happy with how it ended.”

Halt and Catch Fire airs its series finale Saturday, October 14 at 9:00 p.m. ET on AMC.

Andrew Garfield plays real-life inspiration Robin Cavendish in “Breathe”

Bleecker Street/Participant Media/Laurie Sparham (NEW YORK) — Andrew Garfield knows how rewarding it can be to tell an untold story. He brought us the little-known-yet-remarkable true story of war hero Desmond Doss in last year’s Hacksaw Ridge — which earned him an Oscar nomination. And now, he’s helping bring another true-life hero’s story to light in Breathe.

Garfield plays Robin Cavendish, a man who ends up paralyzed from the neck down after contracting polio in the 1950s. With his wife Diana by his side, he becomes an advocate for the severely disabled and helps develop a revolutionary wheelchair with a built-in ventilator.

“It’s really about how him not compromising his own life made so much change in other people’s,” Garfield says.

To get to know the real man behind the character, Garfield spoke with many who knew Robin. This included chats with Robin’s son, Jonathan Cavendish, who is a producer on the film, and Robin’s best friend, Colin Campbell, who is played by Ed Speleers in the film.

Garfield says he learned that humor was a major part of how Robin coped with his situation.

“I think the way he saw it was — I mean this is just me interpreting and theorizing, but — if God wasn’t gonna take him seriously then why should he take life seriously?” he says. “And I think funnily enough, he created a lot of meaning out of that stance.”

Seeing the love story between Robin and Diana made Garfield think about whether he would take care of a loved one in a similar situation.

“I believe if I was with the love of my life I would, yeah,” he says. “But, you never know, do you?”

Breathe also stars Claire Foy and Hugh Bonneville, and marks the directorial debut of Planet of the Apes motion capture acting pioneer Andy Serkis. It hits select theaters today.

Jussie Smollett reveals how he parlayed his Langston Hughes role in “Marshall” into a full biopic

Getty Images via ABC/John Shearer(NEW YORK) — Jussie Smollett stars as the prolific poet and activist Langston Hughes in the Thurgood Marshall biopic, Marshall. While the Empire star says he only has a “small cameo,” in the film, Smollett says the opportunity to portray Hughes was welcomed — but definitely unexpected.

“I was doing the Image Awards and I was singing a tribute to John Legend and Reggie [Hudlin] came up to me and said, ‘Listen.. we’re doing the Thurgood Marshall with Chadwick Boseman and Josh Gad and Sterling Brown and all of these amazing… Kate Hudson.. amazing actors,'” Smollett tells ABC Radio. “And he said, ‘I’d love it if you’d come play Langston Hughes.'”

After he got over the initial shock of the film’s director asking him to play one of his icons, the actor says he quickly realized the bigger opportunity in taking the smaller part.

“I told him I would do it on one condition,” Smollett explains. “He said, ‘What?’ I said, ‘Within three to four years we’re doing the full Langston Hughes story. And he said, ‘Done.’ So I went on and did it and had an amazing time.”

Smollett continues: “And the night before I went up to Buffalo to film it, I went and sat in front of Hughes house in Harlem and I’ve been able to go in now and visit and walk around and feel it and it’s just incredible. I LOVE Langston Hughes.”

Marshall hits theaters today.

Quentin Tarantino “stunned and heartbroken” by accusations against longtime collaborator Harvey Weinstein

AFP/Getty Images/FREDERIC J. BROWN(LOS ANGELES) — Quentin Tarantino has finally commented about sexual harassment and near-constant sexual harassment and assault allegations that have been made about Harvey Weinstein, who produced nearly every major movie in Tarantino’s filmography.

Actress Amber Tamblin sent out a pair of tweets on Tarantino’s behalf, saying they had been speaking about Weinstein when Tarantino decided to break his silence.

“For the last week, I’ve been stunned and heartbroken about the revelations that have come to light about my friend for 25 years Harvey Weinstein. I need a few more days to process my pain, emotions, anger and memory and then I will speak publicly about it.”

Harvey and Bob Weinstein’s former production company, Miramax, was integral to Tarantino’s success. Their company produced his first theatrical film, Reservoir Dogs, and went on to produce True Romance, which Tarantino wrote, as well as Pulp Fiction — for which Quentin shared a best screenwriting Oscar win with Roger Avary — and Jackie Brown, the Kill Bill movies, and the Grindhouse double-feature.

Miramax’s successor, The Weinstein Company, produced Tarantino’s Oscar-winning Inglorious Basterds, as well as Django Unchained, and co-distributed the Oscar-nominated Western The Hateful Eight.
