Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan win awards for promoting animal rights & veganism

Katia Temkin

While they’re waiting to find out if they’ve won the Grammys they’re all nominated for, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Chappell Roan have a different award to celebrate: one that recognizes their efforts toward the promotion of plant-based food, animal adoption and cruelty-free products.

They’ve all been named winners of the Libby Awards, handed out by PETA’s youth division, peta2. “Libby” stands for “liberation,” as in animal liberation, and each year the awards are given to people who work to protect animals in various ways.

Ariana won “Best Viral Moment for Animals” due to her appearance on Hot Ones, where she ate animal-free wings and spoke about being vegan. The episode has racked up more than 8 million views since it debuted four months ago. One of the people she beat was Sabrina Carpenter, who was nominated for wearing faux fur in her video for “Please Please Please.”

Chappell was named peta2’s Pawsome Animal Adoption Advocate for visiting an animal shelter while on tour to highlight some of the adoptable dogs. On social media, she also honored her late guinea pigs, who were rescued.

And Taylor won in the Favorite Vegan and Cruelty-Free Celeb Product category for offering fans a Tortured Poets Department journal bound in vegan leather. She, too, beat out Sabrina, who was nominated for her Cherry Baby fragrance, as well as Halsey, who was nominated for the lip stain that’s part of her a24 makeup line.

Mariah Carey thanks fans for making ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ #1 again

Columbia Records

Mariah Carey‘s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” made its annual return to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 on Monday. Mariah found out the news that night in the best way possible: while she was performing a concert on her current Christmas tour.

On Instagram, Mariah posted footage of the moment, which shows her accepting a congratulatory bouquet from her twins, Moroccan and Monroe. “Wow, that was a perfect moment to find that out,” said the diva in the clip.

She captioned the post, “Last night on stage in Raleigh, North Carolina, I found out that All I Want For Christmas Is You returned to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. I couldn’t have dreamed of a better time or place to celebrate the news than on stage with my amazing fans, my kids and my #Christmastime tour family. I love you and am so grateful to you all.”

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” came out 30 years ago, but it didn’t hit #1 on the Hot 100 until 2019. Since then, it’s continued to top the chart for multiple weeks. It’s currently #1 for a 15th overall week.

Ed Sheeran’s next album is done, will feature ‘big pop’: ‘It’s quite exciting’

ABC/Paula Lobo

Ed Sheeran‘s got his next era all figured out.

After finishing his “Mathematics” series of albums in 2023 with Subtract, Ed tells Variety that he’s moving on to something new: His next album is finished and he’s already filmed two music videos. He plans to shoot two more early next year while he tours India.

Ed is also planning to promote the heck out of the new album because, as he notes, Subtract was “obviously a completely different record that didn’t really call for big pop stuff.” By contrast, with the new album, Ed says, “It feels like I’m getting back into big pop for the first time in a long time. It’s quite exciting.”

While we wait for that, we can enjoy Ed’s holiday tune “Under the Tree,” featured in the animated Netflix movie That Christmas, written by Richard Curtis, the man behind the holiday classic Love Actually.

Ed says the film is “perfect” to watch with his younger daughter, Jupiter. In fact, they’ve watched it three times, and he says he “even rented a little local cinema to do it with my mates and their kids.” He adds, “It’s nice to have something quintessentially British, but also that you can watch with young children.”

‘The Golden Bachelor’ star Gerry Turner shares cancer diagnosis

ABC/Brian Bowen Smith

The Golden Bachelor star Gerry Turner is opening up about being diagnosed with a blood cancer earlier this year.

Turner, 72, revealed in an exclusive interview with People published on Wednesday that he was diagnosed with Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia.

Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia is a rare blood cancer that results in an excess of abnormal white blood cells in the bone marrow, according to the National Institute of Health.

The NIH estimates that the disease affects three in 1 million people per year in the United States, and the condition occurs twice as often in men than women.

Turner told the outlet that there being no cure for Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia “weighs heavily in every decision I make” and that the diagnosis “was like 10 tons of concrete were just dropped on me.”

“And I was a bit in denial for a while, I didn’t want to admit it,” he said.

All of this occurred while he was still married to Theresa Nist, whom he proposed to on The Golden Bachelor, which aired its finale in November 2023, and whom he married in a televised wedding on ABC in January.

The couple revealed to GMA in April they were divorcing.

Turner said that after his diagnosis, “the importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority” compared to spending time with his family.

“When you are hit with that kind of news and the shock wears off after a few days or a few weeks and you regroup and you realize what’s important to you, that’s where you start to move forward,” he told the outlet. “And I hope that people understand in retrospect now that that had a huge bearing on my decisions and I think probably Theresa’s as well.”

Turner said he’s embracing the fun of life and not living with regrets these days and wishes Nist “all of the good luck in the world, that she finds everything she wants to.” He said he holds their brief relationship as “a cherished memory.”
