(NEW YORK) — What was President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama’s relationship like in its early days? A new film inspired by the couple attempts to give us a look back at the Obamas, long before they moved into the White House.
A trailer released Thursday for Southside with You features Parker Sawyers as Barack Obama and Tika Sumpter as the future first lady, then known as Michelle Robinson.
The movie turns back the clock to the summer of 1989, when Obama, then a young law firm associate, pursued Michelle Robinson, a lawyer. The story follows them on their first date, which includes a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago and their first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor.
At one point in the trailer, Robinson insists, “This is not a date. How’s it gonna look if I start dating the first cute black guy who walks through the firm’s doors? It would be tacky.”
Obama replies, “You think I’m cute?” Robinson shoots back, “I didn’t say that.”
Southside with You, executive-produced by singer John Legend, hits theaters this August.
