Adam Wakefield on “The Voice”; Trae Patton/NBC(LOS ANGELES) — The latest Voice performance show began on a patriotic note, with appearances by first lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden.

The two joined host Carson Daly at the start of Monday night’s two-hour broadcast to promote the five-year anniversary of their Joining Forces initiative, which calls on Americans to rally around service members, veterans, and their families.

Obama introduced a performance by the top 10, who sang “Home” by Dierks Bentley. Afterward, the artists from Teams Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and Pharrell Williams competed for viewers’ votes.

The contestant who was “instantly saved” last week, Daniel Passino of Team Pharrell, was first up with the Aerosmith hit “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.” His former coach, Christina, said he laid out his heart and soul with passion. Pharrell detected pitch issues, but he pointed out that in the middle of the performance there was a note that “came in under” and Daniel pushed through.

Team Adam’s Shalyah Fearing followed up with Emeli Sandé’s “My Kind Of Love.” Blake said he likes it when Shalyah is “wild” with her singing. Pharrell enjoyed the fact that she operates “in the now.” Adam said he regretted telling her earlier in the season to rein it in.

Nick Hagelin of Team Christina tackled “I Can’t Help It” by Michael Jackson. Pharrell commented that Nick — Christina’s “comeback artist” earlier in the season — represents hope for people looking for a second chance. Christina said the influence of the King of Pop on Nick is in him and he can “execute it really well.”

Hannah Huston of Team Pharrell covered the Adele hit “Rolling in the Deep.” Adam liked 99% of it, but thought there was one note that was slightly off in the chorus. Pharrell seemingly disagreed, saying the performance was a “1,000% amazing.” He added that Hannah has shown growth as an artist.

Team Adam rocker Laith Al-Saadi played the B.B. King version of “The Thrill Is Gone.” Blake praised his guitar skills but cautioned him not to downplay his singing ability. Adam said it was the “best show of musicianship” he’s ever seen on the show.

Paxton Ingram of Team Blake belted out Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.” Blake said Paxton is “becoming this artist right before our very eyes.” He declared that Paxton’s performances this week and last is the reason why he’s a coach on The Voice.

Paxton’s teammate, Mary Sarah, sang “Stand by Your Man” by Tammy Wynette. Adam said it was very much “in the zone” of who Mary Sarah is. Blake said the country audience was engaged with the performance, which blew “the roof off the place.”

Bryan Bautista delivered a rendition of Romeo Santos’ “Promise” for Team Christina. Pharrell gushed about how amazing it was. Christina stated that Bryan is the only remaining artist representing the Latino community.

Alisan Porter of Team Christina sang Patty Griffin’s “Let Him Fly.” It was a choice inspired by her past addiction and a boyfriend who passed away. Adam commended her for making the tune personal. Christina said she was proud of Alisan for sharing a heartfelt story.

Team Blake’s Adam Wakefield closed the show by sitting behind the piano for Ray Charles’ “I Got A Woman.” Pharrell loved the piano solo in the middle, and said Adam is the “next one.” Blake called it his favorite performance of the night.

One artist will be sent home on Tuesday night’s results show, airing at 8 p.m. Eastern time on NBC.
