Judge at Prince Estate Hearing: “We Are in Uncharted Water”

Neil Lupin/Redferns(MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.) — The battle for Prince’s estate continued Monday morning at the the Carver Country District Court in Minneapolis, MN.  Five of the late singer’s siblings and their attorneys, along with attorneys from the estate’s trust, attended the hearing that will determine who’s the rightful heir to the music icon’s estate.

Judge Kevin Eide, who presided over the hearing, explained that the case was a crossroads between probate and paternity law, which made it difficult to determine which motions and hearings should be held privately. “We are in uncharted water,” the judge said.

Attorneys from Bremer Trust are handling Prince’s estate in the absence of a will, which has yet to be found, if it exists at all.  Trust attorney say they’ve so far searched thousands of documents in four different locations looking for a will, with no success.  They said the search will soon be over.

Subsequently, the parties involved are working to interpret Minnesota law in order to determine what factors legally establish paternity, so they can then determine which, if any, of Prince’s alleged heirs are entitled to a piece of his estate.

Attorneys for the potential heirs are requesting that the case be settled quickly, so as not to harm the estate, which they consider a “national treasure.” Judge Eide promised to have the Minnesota Court of Appeals review the case to ensure proper handling, declaring, “I want to do this right.”

Prince died April 21 from an overdose of the painkiller fentanyl.
