Former duet partners Selena & Charlie back in the top 40 with solo hits

800

InterscopeCharlie Puth‘s most recent trip to the top 10 was with Selena Gomez: their duet “We Don’t Talk Anymore” reached #9 last fall.  Now, new solo singles from both artists have reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Selena’s new track, “Bad Liar,” which samples the 1977 classic “Psycho Killer” by alt-rock legends Talking Heads, has jumped from #80 to #27 on the Hot 100. It’s her first solo hit since last year’s “Kill ‘Em with Kindness”; her collabo with Kygo, “It Ain’t Me,” recently reached the top 10.

Meanwhile, Charlie’s new song, “Attention,” has risen to #35.  He told Billboard the song was inspired by reading some guy’s Instagram, where he was describing a breakup.

“I think [he was] trying to convey some sort of message, like ‘I’ve moved on and I’m a guy and I’m strong,'” Charlie told Billboard. “But what I got from that was, ‘Wow, this girl completely played you and this girl just wanted attention.'”

Elsewhere on the chart, Liam Payne becomes the final member of One Direction to chart a solo hit, as “Strip That Down” debuts at #42.  And speaking of group members going solo, former Fifth Harmony member  Camila Cabello‘s solo single, “Crying in the Club,” has debuted at #47.
