Lena Headey as Queen Cersei Lannister on “Game of Thrones”; image courtesy of HBO(NEW YORK) — To advance the arrival of Game of Thrones season six on digital platforms, HBO is taking full advantage of the polarizing 2016 presidential election campaign by encouraging fans to do their cast their ballots for the one candidate they think should sit on the Iron Throne.
An advertisement for the acclaimed fantasy drama was shot to look like a campaign commercial. As characters and images from season six fade in and out, words flash across the screen to entice fans and cheekily play on the current political climate:
“For those who feel left out/For those who don’t see their banner on the ballot/For those who don’t like how the game is played/We demand strong leaders/Who stand for those who sacrifice/Who know what it means to rise from nothing/Who won’t hesitate to break the game.”
The ad then directs you to visit TheGoTParty.com and teases a link to theGoTParty candidates — and, naturally, a link to purchase season six.
Tickets vying for votes on the website include Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow and Lyanna Mormont, Cersei Lannister and Qyburn, and Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish with Sansa Stark. So far, the Snow-Mormont ticket has a strong lead, but voting will remain open through August and the winner to be crowned Sept. 1.
Game of Thrones season seven will premiere in the summer of 2017.
