Image Group LA/ABCSelena Gomez wants her fans to know that despite being the most-followed person on Instagram, social media is not real life. In fact, she says she “can’t stand” social media.
With the new Netflix show she’s executive producing, 13 Reasons Why, the singer hopes to present the real issues young people face. And she knows those difficulties all too well.
“I was actually going through a really difficult time when they started production,” she told reporters at a Netflix press event this week. “I went away for 90 days, and I actually met tons of kids in this place that we’re talking about a lot of the issues that these characters are experiencing.”
13 Reasons Why, based on the YA novel of the same name, is about a teen who commits suicide and leaves behind audio tapes that reveal why she took her own life. Selena says she hopes kids today will watch it and understand.
“I would do anything to be able to have a good influence on this generation, but I definitely relate to everything that was going on,” she says. “I was there for the last episode, and I was a mess just seeing it all come to life, because I’ve experienced that.”
The show premieres on Netflix March 31.
