MTV Exec Says They’re “Counting On Artists” to Get Political on Tonight’s MTV VMAs

MTV(NEW YORK) — The MTV Video Music Awards have given us plenty of controversial moments over the years, but this year, show organizers hope that in addition to the usual wardrobe malfunctions and onstage feuds, the stars will throw politics into the mix.

“By all means, in a political year, we’re counting on artists to take this moment and address young America and give them some point of view of what’s going on in the world,” says MTV executive Erik Flannigan.  But of course, he admits they’re also counting on big musical moments, like one from performer Britney Spears.

“I think she knows what her history is,” Flannigan tells ABC Radio. “She’s walking into the building knowing what she’s done on this show before. So, just as [important as] it is for us to top ourselves, I know it is for her [too].”  Flannigan says Britney’s performance of her latest hit “Make Me” will be “unprecedented.”

Pop and R&B star Rihanna will take home the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award tonight.  Flannigan says, “We’re gonna see a lot of different Rihanna looks — not just visually but musically. And the way you see it appear through the show is gonna be a little bit different, too.”

This year, for the first time, the VMAs are being held at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

“The moment you’re inside Madison Square Garden, you’re at a different level,” Flannigan says. “So in some ways, I think this is a show that leans into the history of the building…we’re gonna take advantage of every single inch of it.”

Flannigan’s also excited that U.S. Women’s Gymnastic Team members, as well as gold medal swimmer Michael Phelps, will be on hand as presenters.  “I think they’re gonna be the ones who everyone wants to take a picture with,” Flannigan laughs. “Celebrities included!”

The MTV VMAs air at 9 p.m. ET tonight.
