“Doctor Strange,” “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Trolls” Among Weekend’s New Films

Benedict Cumberbatch in “Doctor Strange”; Marvel Studios/Disney(NEW YORK) — Here’s a look at the new movies opening nationwide Friday:

* Doctor Strange — Benedict Cumberbatch plays the titular character in the latest entry into the Marvel cinematic universe — a brilliant but arrogant surgeon whose career is destroyed by injuries sustained in a car accident.  Searching for a remedy for his physical ills, he finds a new path when a sorceress, played by Tilda Swinton, takes him under her wing and trains him to defend the world against evil. Chiweitel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams and Mads Mikkelson co-star. Rated PG-13.

Hacksaw Ridge — Mel Gibson’s WWII drama, starring Andrew Garfield, is based on the true story of Desmond T. Doss, and Army medic serving during the Battle of Okinawa who refused to carry a weapon and became the first conscientious objector in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Sam Worthington and Vince Vaughn also star. Rated R.

* Trolls — Dreamworks’ animated musical stars Anna Kendrick as Poppy, the optimistic leader of the trolls, who, along with Branch — her polar opposite, played by Justin Timberlake — embark on an adventure to save their fellow trolls from the evil, troll-eating Bergens. Zooey Deschanel, Jeffrey Tambor, Russell Brand, James Corden and Gwen Stefani also provide voices. Rated PG.
