Why Selena Gomez’s new single is probably about The Weeknd

Petra Collins Every time Selena Gomez releases a song, it seems that people wonder if it’s about Justin Bieber.  Well, when she released her latest single, “Bad Liar,” the guy who co-wrote the song shut down that kind of speculation right away.

When the music lyrics site Genius unveiled the song’s lyrics with a tweet saying, “Selena Gomez is all of us tryna get over an ex on her new track ‘bad liar,'” Justin Tranter, one of the co-writers, responded with some criticism.

“You got some of the lyrics wrong, and it’s actually about trying to hide magic feelings for someone new, but not being able to,” Tranter tweeted.  This seems to indicate that “Bad Liar” is actually about Selena’s current love, The Weeknd.

“I was walking down the street the other day/ Trying to distract myself/ Then I see your face/ Ooo, you got someone else/ Tryna play it coy/ Tryna make it disappear/ But just like the battle of Troy/ There’s nothing subtle here,” she sings.

In addition to Tranter, “Bad Liar” was co-written by Selena, “Issues” singer Julia Michaels and songwriter/producer Ian Kirkpatrick.  The four members of Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Talking Heads also are credited, because the bass line in the song is sampled from the new-wave group’s classic 1977 tune “Psycho Killer.”
