Bebe Rexha is revealing some secrets about her latest single, “I’m a Mess” — including that fact that her mom isn’t exactly a fan of its darker lyrics.
“My mom absolutely hates that song,” she tells Australia’s News.com.au, laughing, “She said ‘Look at ‘Meant to Be,’ couldn’t you put out another song that’s happy and positive?’”
Bebe adds, “But ‘I’m A Mess’ is a real side of me, something I deal with every day, with anxiety and depression.”
She admits the song is also about love, revealing, “That song was inspired by a guy I really still like, it’s been a year now, but I don’t think he knows the song is about him.”
In the song, she sings, “I’m a mess, I’m a loser, I’m a hater, I’m a user/I’m a mess for your love, it ain’t new.” Bebe says she wrote much of the song’s lyrics in an unexpected place.
“A lot of those lyrics I wrote in the bathtub. I run the water and talk to myself and record it as a voice memo,” she explains. “Those lyrics come from real things I think about constantly.”
Bebe’s album, Expectations, is out now.
