(LOS ANGELES) — The 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards were handed out at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium on Sunday, with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri winning the night with three trophies on the movie side, and HBO’s Veep and Big Little Lies taking home two each on the TV end.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her record-setting eighth and ninth SAG Awards, grabbing female actor in a comedy series honors for Veep and sharing best ensemble cast trophy with her HBO show’s co-stars. However, as many suspected, the 57-year-old actress — who’s been battling breast cancer and just completed her last round of chemotherapy — wasn’t on hand to accept them.
Presenter Connie Britton accepted the award on Louis-Dreyfus’ behalf telling Louis-Dreyfus, “We’re thinking of you.”
Louis-Dreyfus later tweeted, “I wish I could have been @SAGawards tonight but have to admit it’s pretty fun to watch in my pj’s.” She added, “So happy for my @VeepHBO bozos for winning ensemble award. Miss being at the table with you all. How was the chicken?”
SAG’s first-time-ever Awards host Kristen Bell avoided any mention of President Donald Trump or Hollywood’s many sexual misconduct allegations, except to stress that “everyone’s story deserves to be told, especially now.”
“We are living in a watershed moment in time, and as we march forward with active momentum and open ears, let’s make sure we are leading the charge with empathy and diligence, because fear and anger never win the race,” she added.
Beverly Hills, 90210 alum and current SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris was more direct, praising women for coming forward with their stories and noting that female and male actors are agents for change
“We are in the midst of a massive cultural shift with brave voices saying, ‘Me too’,” she said. “Change is coming and we are the agents of that change…we can and we must create an environment in which discrimination, harassment and abuse are no longer tolerated.”
James Franco, nominated for his role in The Disaster Artist, skipped the red carpet in the wake of recent sexual misconduct allegations, but attended the awards. Best actor in a comedy series nominee Aziz Ansari , also facing a sexual misconduct controversy, avoided the ceremony altogether.
Morgan Freeman, this year’s lifetime achievement award recipient, also got into the act, pointing out that the male award statue “works from the back. From the front, it’s gender-specific.”
Rosanna Arquette — one of over 60 women who came forward with allegations against former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein — praised other women and men for breaking their silence, listing many of them by name.
