“The Voice” recap: The battle rounds continue with Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson each stealing artists

NBC/Trae PattonThe battle rounds continued Tuesday night on The Voice, as teammates from Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson’s teams went head-to-head for the right to advance to the next stage in the competition, a night that also saw Jennifer and Kelly each stealing an artist for their teams.

Each coach enlisted the help of a guest adviser during rehearsals: CeeLo Green for Team Adam; Keith Urban for Team Blake; Thomas Rhett for Team Kelly; and Halsey for Team Jennifer.

Here are the highlights of Tuesday night’s show:

Powerful gospel singer Kymberli Joye and duo OneUp, representing Team Kelly, faced off against each other on “Mercy,” by Brett Young. Both Clarkson and her adviser, Thomas Rhett, were floored with their performance in rehearsal. After some minor tweaks, Kelly, who chose the song for its “pure passion,” predicted the trio would deliver “the performance of the season.” It ended up being a tough choice for Kelly, who picked Kymberli. She moves on to the knockout rounds. OneUp was eliminated.

Next up, Adam, along with his adviser and “spirit animal” CeeLo Green watched as 15-year-old Anthony Arya take on the more seasoned Steve Memmolo for a bluesy cover of “Aimee,” by Pure Prairie League. Ultimately, Adam opted for experience, declaring Memmolo the winner. He moves on to the knockouts, but so does Arya, who was stolen by Jennifer.

Team Blake’s gravely-voiced soulful singer Chris Kroeze went toe-to-toe with Mercedes Ferreira-Dias, who got Shelton to turn his chair after failing to get any of the coaches to turn for her last season. They battled on Steve Winwood’s “Back in the High Life.” Blake and his advisor, Keith Urban, felt the two vocalists matched up perfectly, but had a few suggestions on how each of them could step up their games. How well each “put our notes into motion,” said Blake, would decide the winner. Blake ended up picking Chris, based on his incredible range. Mercedes was sent packing.

Finally, Mike Parker and Natasha GreyCloud, representing Team Jennifer, duked it out on John Mayer’s “Gravity,” with Hudson explaining that she wanted to “bring the soul out of both of them.” Mike, in her opinion, had the “instincts,” but needed to “own” them. Natasha, on the other hand, had a range, but “wasn’t letting it all out.” Jennifer declared the battle a tie, but went with Mike for “strategic” reasons. He moves on to the knockouts, as does Natasha, who was scooped up by Kelly.

Also advancing to the knockout rounds on Tuesday were Team Adam’s Tyke James, defeating Jarred Matthew; and Katrina Cain, from Blake’s team, who beat out Rachel Messer

The Voice returns with more battles Monday night at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
