The Voice recap: The battle rounds continue with Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson stealing artists

708

NBC/Trae PattonMonday night on The Voice, coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson continued tweaking their teams, as members of each of their crews went head-to-head for the right to advance to the next stage in the competition.

By the end of the night, Adam stole artists from both Blake and Kelly, while Clarkson got revenge on Jennifer, stealing an artist Hudson had “The Block” to prevent her from competing for during the blind auditions.

Each coach enlisted the help of a guest adviser during rehearsals: CeeLo Green for Team Adam; Keith Urban for Team Blake; Thomas Rhett for Team Kelly; and Halsey for Team Jennifer.

Here are the highlights of Tuesday night’s show:

Keith Paluso and Dave Fenley, representing Team Blake, went head to head on “One Woman Man,” by George Jones, whom Blake paired for their similar “edgy” voices, explaining that he only had room for one of them on his team. Blake was looking for Paluso to become more “comfortable” with the song. Fenley needed to watch his diction. Both did what they were asked, but Blake declared Fenley the winner. He advances to the knockouts — as does Paluso, who was stolen by Adam.

Team Adam’s teen duo, Emily Hough, 16 and Reagan Strange, 14, battled on Ed Sheeran’s “Photograph.” Adam noted, Emily’s voice was strong and confident, while Reagan’s was “soft and sweet.” His advice for the duo: “Be connected and engaged in the song” and “in the moment.” Adam gave Reagan the edge, so she moves on to the knockouts, while Emily was sent home.

Later on, Adam’s paired Jake Wells and Natalie Brady, who traded vocal runs on Semisonic’s “Closing Time.” Levine crowned Jake the winner. Brady was sent packing.

Abbie Cates, 17, and 21-year-old Delaney Silvernel, representing Team Kelly, matched voices on Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do.” Kelly observed that both were extremely talented, but her decision would come down to which was “ready right now.” Kelly found something about Abbie’s voice “intriguing and captivating” and declared her the winner. Cates advances to the knockouts, but so does Delaney, who was snatched up by Adam.

Finally, Zaxai and Tyshawn Colquitt, representing Jennifer’s team, battled on “Love Lies,” by Khalid and Normani. Jennifer noted that Tyshawn had “an R&B feel,” while Zaxai had more of a “soulful, old-school feel.” Jennifer’s adviser, Halsey, reminded the two not to stray too far from the melody of the song and pay attention to the lyrics as well. Jennifer named Tyshawn the winner. He moves on to the knockouts. However, the competition wasn’t over for Zaxai. He was stolen by Kelly — denied the chance to fight for the artist during the blinds when Hudson used “The Block.”

Earlier in the evening, Jennifer paired soulful singers Franc West and Matt Johnson on Alex Clare’s “Too Close.” Franc won the round and moves on to the knockouts. Matt’s run on the show was over.

Also advancing to the knockouts, but not shown on Monday’s show: Team Adam’s RADHA, beating Fousheé; Team Kelly’s Chevel Shepherd, prevailing over Mikele Buck; and Team JHud’s Mackenzie Thomas, besting Audri Bartholomew.

The battle rounds conclude, when The Voice returns Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
