The Script announce new album, “Freedom Child,” due September 1

Columbia RecordsFollowing the release of their new single, “Rain,” the Script have announced that their new album, Freedom Child, will be here September 1.  A U.S. tour will kick off September 28. If you pre-order the album now, you can get access to tickets Tuesday.

Speaking about the new album to Metro, lead singer Danny O’Donoghue said, “We took a year off, we all just chilled out for a while to soak in everything that’s going on, musically, culturally, politically, and I think that shows in the music.

Danny tells Newsweek that the title of Freedom Child came from their guitarist Mark Sheehan’s seven-year-old, who asked him, “Dad, what’s terrorism?”  Says Danny, “That’s not an…easy thing to answer, no matter how old you are.”

The singer thinks the issue of terrorism hasn’t “been reflected in pop culture at all,” adding, “I think…we’re too busy trying to entertain people instead of going, ‘You know what, there’s something we need to talk about right now.’”

Mark tells Newsweek, “Musicians aren’t standing up enough. They did stand up together at the Ariana Grande concert…” to which Danny adds, “That’s the first show of support that musicians got behind. Where the hell is Bono? Where’s Jay-Z? Where’s Beyoncé?”

“Nobody wants to chip in on a conversation about terrorism because they might be thought of next…This is before Ariana Grande put it under a magnifying glass,” claims Danny. “You’d find it very hard to find artists to make a big stand if that hadn’t happened. It’s only when it’s on your doorstep.”

That’s not to say that Freedom Child is all about current events.  There’s at least one classic Script ballad on there — “Arms Open” — while the catchy single “Rain” is a club-ready breakup song.
