Ruven AfanadorSam Smith won’t perform in Australia until January, but he’s already donated part of the profits from his concert Down Under to a cause he feels strongly about: marriage equality.
Australia is in the middle of a mail-in vote to legalize same-sex marriage, and the Australian Marriage Equality campaign tells the Sydney Morning Herald that Sam made his donation ahead of time because he’d like them to get an extra boost in its last few weeks. The results of the vote will be revealed November 15.
“Sam knows all too well about the challenges faced by LGBTI Australians and his generosity towards them will help us achieve fairness and equality for all,” said the co-chair of Australian Marriage Equality. “Sam doesn’t need to do this. He isn’t Australian but he understands what it feels like to be in a relationship that isn’t considered equal.”
The rest of the money from Sam’s January performance at the Sydney Opera House will be donated to organizations that support young gay, lesbian, bisexual and gender diverse youth. Tickets go on sale Monday.
