Petition calls for New Orleans Confederate statues to be replaced by tributes to Britney Spears

David LaChapelle/RCA RecordsOne of the biggest hot button issues of the moment is the question of whether or not statues across the U.S. that depict figures of the Confederacy — such as Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis — should be taken down. But one fan in New Orleans is now arguing that those statues should indeed come down…to make way for a “real Louisiana hero:” one Britney Jean Spears.

The petition, started by a fan named Kassie Thibodeaux [TIH buh doe], argues that throughout her career, Britney has done numerous charitable things to support her home state, such as donating a quarter-million dollars to help Louisiana flood victims, and raising hundreds of thousands more for Louisiana education and Hurricane Katrina relief.

That alone would make her a hero, but Thibodeaux claims that Britney also deserves to be immortalized in bronze or stone because “she’s proven her strength of character.”

Britney has “not only overcom[e] highly publicized mental breakdown,” argues Thibodeau, and is “continuously working towards improving herself. She’s an inspiration to millions.”

When we last checked, the Change.org petition had attracted nearly 1400 signatures.
