Normani Kordei brings the heat in a tight race on the first night of “Dancing with the Stars” finals

ABC/Craig SjodinMonday night’s Dancing with the Stars was the first night of an epic two-night season finale.

With no eliminations scheduled, the three remaining finalists each performed two dances – a Redemption Style dance (Viennese waltz or quickstep), and a Freestyle dance – one of the biggest competitive dances of the season.

Going into her performance we learned that 20-year-old Fifth Harmony stunner Normani Kordei had suffered an injury to her foot, twisting her ankle, but as her partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy said, “she would never admit it.”

Normani was tough and it hardly seemed to register as she and Val brought the heat to the dancefloor with a scorching quickstep to “Check It Out” by Oh the Larceny. Normani looked absolutely stunning in her sparkling black catsuit, gliding across the floor.

She and Val mesmerized the audience and judge Bruno Tonioli was at his most evocative when he stood up and shouted, calling her “brilliant.” Judges Len Goodman and Julianne Hough offered sharp critiques, but Normani still earned an impressive 38 out of 40 with 10s from Bruno and Carrie Ann and nines from Len and Julianne.

Normani and Val later got a perfect score for their freestyle to “What the World Needs Now is Love” by Andra Day and during the judges critique, she thanked everyone at the show for helping her bring her light.

Normani took second place, but still brought in a high score. It’s up to her – and her fans – tomorrow night.

Dancing with the Stars concludes season 24 Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. on ABC
