Photo by Rob Verhorst/RedfernsThe Marvin Gaye estate’s long drawn-out legal battle with Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams over Thicke’s 2013 hit “Blurred Lines” has finally come to a pricey end.
The artists behind the buzzy single have been ordered by Judge John A. Kronstadt to pay the family of the late, legendary “What’s Going On” singer $5 million, Billboard reports. The hefty sum includes Thicke, Williams and Williams’ publishing company owing a combined $2.9 million, plus an additional $1.7 million required to be paid by Thicke and some $357,631 from Williams and his More Water from Nazareth company.
As previously reported, the Gaye family sued Thicke and Williams in 2013 for copyright infringement of the soul singer’s 1977 hit song “Got to Give It Up.” Initially, a judge ruled that both Thicke and Williams owed Gaye’s estate $7 million, but following an appeal the judgment was decreased.
Moving forward, the Gaye family is entitled to a running royalty of half the “Blurred Lines” songwriter and publishing revenue.
