Mariah on New Year’s Eve fiasco: “I blame everybody”

ABC/Lou RoccoMariah Carey is still talking about her performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Live with Ryan Seacrest — she’s still upset about it, but she says she couldn’t possibly begin to explain what happened.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Mariah says, “It’s just something where if I can’t explain it to the entire world, then they’re not going to understand it, because it’s not what they do. Just like I wouldn’t understand somebody who had a desk job and how to do that. I couldn’t. I literally am incapable of being in the real world and surviving.”

The story that fans got was that Mariah claimed her in-ear monitors didn’t work; she couldn’t hear herself, or her backing tracks, so she couldn’t sing. Dick Clark Productions claimed her monitors were working fine.

“This was out of my control, and had everything not been such a total chaotic mess, then I would have been able to make something happen,” she tells Rolling Stone. “Even the dancers should have stopped dancing and helped me off the f****** stage. I’m sorry. It was a mess, and I blame everybody, and I blame myself for not leaving after rehearsal.”

So what’s next for Mariah? She says she has no plans to make a new album — instead, she plans to record and release individual singles, in between going on the road with Lionel Richie.  “I Don’t,” her most recent release, is the first example of that.
