Luis Fonsi says “Despacito” success is “insane”; teases “really special” follow up

ABC/ Heidi GutmanIt’s been fourteen weeks and counting at #1 for “Despacito,” by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber, and Luis says the success of the song has been “just insane.”

The song — the biggest mostly Spanish-language hit on the Billboard Hot 100 since “Macarena” — is just two weeks shy of tying the record for the all-time longest running #1 hit: “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men

“I can’t even believe it. It’s been 14 weeks…we actually just tied ‘Macarena,'” he told ABC Radio before his appearance on Good Morning America Wednesday. “I’m so surprised how people are connecting to the song, being that it’s a different language. The language barrier has been broken, and I’m just so honored that people are enjoying the song.”

Despite its success, Luis has never actually performed the song live with both Justin and Daddy Yankee, but he says they “absolutely” want to do it.

“I’ve performed it with Justin once and with Daddy Yankee a few times, but we haven’t gotten together all three of us,” he says. “It’s tough, you know, we’re obviously all three on tour, it’s a lot of craziness going on, but..I mean, we’re doing something very, very special.  So we have to celebrate it the best way we can, which is performing it!”

But given the success of “Despacito,” what can Luis possibly do for a follow-up?  He says he’s got something “really special” planned.

“We just confirmed [it]…yesterday!” he laughs. “And it hasn’t been recorded, so I’m a firm believer of, until it’s done, let’s not over-celebrate it.  But I’m really excited, ’cause it’s a really cool collaboration, and it’s an amazing song.”

You’ll be able to hear Luis perform that song, and “Despacito,” when his North American tour kicks off September 8 in Las Vegas.
