Louis Tomlinson says celebrity parties can be a “dangerous place”

ABC/Phil McCartenLouis Tomlinson may be part of one of the biggest boy bands in the world, but the singer, who’s now launching his solo career, says he’s not really about the glitz and glam of celebrity life.

“What I really can’t ever get used to, or really enjoy, are these super geared-up celebrity parties [where] everyone pretends to be friends, like they’ve known each other for years…But no one actually cares,” he tells Noisey. “You see people who are beyond self-absorbed, and that’s why it can be a dangerous place.”

Louis prefers nights out with his friends from back home in Doncaster, England. He describes his hometown as “the opposite of Hollywood” and says he uses his old mates as a barometer for his music and fashion decisions.

“I like to think that if I came out in some awful tracksuit, they’d all tell me about it on WhatsApp,” he says.

But Louis adds that he and his One Direction band mates are all still close friends. He recalls how they all came to support him when he performed his Steve Aoki collab, “Just Hold On,” on The X Factor, just days after his mother passed away.

“All the boys came to support me, and I didn’t know until a couple of hours beforehand,” he says. “It wasn’t one of those stupid f****** celebrity things where it’s like, ‘Let’s all get in a picture and put it on Instagram and show everyone that we’re best mates’ — we didn’t even put it online.”

He adds, “There are always those little things that people don’t hear about.”

Louis’ new single with Bebe Rexha, “Back to You,” comes out Friday.
